Who will keep the lights on?

Who will pay your living expenses if you are forced out of your home, due to a loss by fire, hurricane damage or another catastrophic event?

“Loss of Use” or “Additional Living Expense” payments may be available from your home insurance company.

Many homeowners policies will pay for temporary living expenditures that you incur because you can’t live in your home due to damage caused by a “peril” covered by your insurance policy.

We have just entered “hurricane season”.  It may be a good idea to review your home insurance policy with your agent to be sure you have this protection and to know what qualifies for reimbursement or payment.

Be sure to check what conditions activate payment.

Will your policy pay if you are required to evacuate or does your policy only pay if your home is damaged?

How much will your policy pay?

How long it will pay?

Here are a few common monthly expenses covered by “Additional Living Expense” protection:

  • Motel stay: $3200
  • Rental home: $2200
  • Relocation costs: $1800
  • Laundry service: $100
  • Storage rental: $200
  • Meals: $2000
  • Pet boarding: $600
  • Increased commuting costs: $200

Having the right kind of protection is important if you lose the loss of use of your home.  It can make the difference of whether you will be living comfortably in a substitute home or nice hotel, or staying in a, not so comfortable rescue shelter.

If you have questions about this protection, call me at 281-316-2334.

I would appreciate the opportunity to answer your questions.
